Memoir editing: Wait Till Your Father Gets Home!

Recollections from a 1960s and 70s childhood in North Queensland by Sharon Schoneveld, independent author

Project date: December 2020

Project tasks: Structural editing, copyediting, manuscript formatting

This laugh-out-loud memoir was a pleasure to edit for independent author Sharon Schoneveld. I felt like I was travelling back in time with her as she revisited the sights, sounds, guilty pleasures and ghastly fashions of her school days in 1960s and 70s North Queensland.

Memoirs are often very personal. As the editor and first reader, it is a privilege to take a sneak peek into an author’s precious memories before they are shared with the world.

My editing tasks included:

  • making suggestions to the author for improving the book’s structure and organisation
  • copyediting the text with attention to grammar, spelling, typos, punctuation and consistency
  • basic fact-checking for accuracy
  • creating an editorial style sheet to ensure consistency of language and style
  • drafting the back-cover blurb
  • formatting the book in Word ready for typesetting.

Wait Till Your Father Gets Home! is available on Amazon.

Hear from the author of Wait Till Your Father Gets Home!

Charlotte’s editing prowess was beyond my wildest expectations and was my ultimate saving grace. Not only did she edit grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction, but she fact-checked things for historical accuracy and suggested reorganisation of chapters to ensure flow and consistency. I would not have had the success with my book as I have without her expert editing skills.
